Zakat al-Mal
## Where is your zakat spent?
Zakat funds are allocated entirely to those entitled to them among the poor and needy inside Syria. They are not mixed with operating costs or with any other purpose. What enters the zakat account leaves as zakat.
## What is the difference between zakat and sadaqah at Al-Dahabi?
**Zakat** is an obligation with recipients defined in Islamic law, and may not be spent outside them. Its funds are therefore kept separate and disbursed, in cash or in kind, to those who meet the description.
**Sadaqah** is voluntary and unconditional, so it may be spent on any beneficial purpose: operations, production, clothing, or a project of continuing impact.
This separation is not merely administrative; it is a condition for zakat to be validly discharged. That is why zakat has its own project and its own account.
## Does my zakat reach those entitled to it?
Disbursement is documented and published in the media center. The families that zakat reaches are usually the same families the field teams already know from their daily work, not names gathered in haste once money arrives.
## How do I calculate my zakat?
**Nisab.** The equivalent of 85 grams of gold. Whoever owns that amount or more owes zakat.
**Hawl.** A full lunar year must pass with the wealth in your possession.
**Rate.** A quarter of a tenth, that is 2.5% of total wealth after deducting your due debts.
**What counts.** Cash, gold and silver, trade goods, and savings. Your home, the car you use, and the tools of your trade do not count.
This is a simplification, not a fatwa. For particular cases — companies, deferred debts, rented property — ask a qualified scholar.
## How do I pay my zakat?
Choose the amount and complete the donation. This project has no financial target, because zakat is a defined right with no ceiling: you pay what is due from you, not what a campaign needs.
